Chapter 11

Captain Bonneville

Among the Blackfeet

By Washington Irving

Noted American writer Washington Irving is said to have shelled out $1,000 (big hard-earned money back then) to buy a manuscript written by a certain Captain Benjamin Louis Eulalie de Bonneville. The author was a professional soldier, educated at West Point, who had taken leave from the Army in 1831 for a life of travel and adventure in the Rocky Mountains. He called his journal A Tour on the Prairies, but apparently his skills in the outdoors were not matched by his skills with the pen. Deemed unpublishable by publishing gate-keepers of that time, the manuscript caught the eye of Washington Irving, who shared Bonneville’s passion for western adventure. Irving rewrote the book, using both his own experiences and material from other sources, in conjunction with Bonneville’s original work. The completed work, The Adventures of Captain Bonneville U.S.A. in the Rocky Mountains of the Far West was a big success. In this excerpt, we join Captain Bonneville as he heads for the Wind River Range.
